I can't imagine anything really valuable showing up, most likely
partially filled Whitman
folders, proof sets etc.

Pawnshops cash in on rising gas costs

By Liam Ford, Tribune staff reporter.

Lugging his DVD player, George Kelly went to the A-Able Pawn Shop in
Waukegan for one simple reason:

so he wouldn't have to choose between filling his gas tank or paying
his phone bill.

Kelly, who was trying to get a $150 loan during his recent visit,
figures he spends about $100 a week on gasoline for his four-cylinder
car.

"I'd have spare change on me if it weren't for the price of gas," said
Kelly, 22, of Waukegan.

As gas prices sprint back up to around $3 a gallon, A-Able Pawn
manager Jose Mejias says more middle-class customers are frequenting
his shop, pawning everything from jewelry and TV sets to their
children's Xboxes.

In Chicago--and even more in its highway-laden suburbs--America's loan
officers of last resort are reporting an uptick in the number of
people hauling in their prized and not-so-prized possessions so they
can scrape together enough money for fuel.

"They come here and say, `I don't have money to fill the gas tank and
pay all the bills,'" Mejias said.

In the UK it is the equivilant of $8.48 a Gallon ($1.82 a Litre) and
some of the more rural areas it is even more.

Mind you about two thirds of that goes to the government in Tax

In my very limited experience with Pawn Shops here in San Jose. I only
found one that had any coins: ACE Pawn and all the coins I seen were
way over priced as though they were not interested in seeling them.
However: I'm sure with the 1000's of coins I saw, there had to be some
deals hidden in there

Pete,

How far is the typical commute to work in the UK? I spent a little
time in Scotland about twenty years ago and everything seemed to be
much closer than over here. If I needed to go far I just took a train.

I commute about 27 miles one way to work. I know some people go a lot
further than that and many less. I ride my motorcycle whenever the
weather permits. It saves me a little over a gallon a day from driving
my car and almost two gallons over driving the truck. I don't think I
could handle 54 miles a day on a horse.

A few months ago, I frequented several pawn shops here in my neck of the
woods. I only saw a couple of coins, which were grossly overpriced.
However, it was a treat to see the lovely "Felina" who waited on me in one
of those stores. Come to think of it, maybe I should drop by there again
and see what she might have...

Maybe you could serenade her with a few 'strums' of your favorite

Long distance commutes are common in the US.

90 minutes or more one way puts you in the category of "extreme"
commuting according to
some article I read awhile back.

Sometimes it is not just the distance but the crowded roads that tie
people up for
long periods of time burning off gas waiting for traffic to move (LA
freeways are notorious
for that but I hear Atlanta and other major cities are getting really
bad as well).

Extreme commuters often suffer from anxiety and stress that manifests
itself in various
ways (none of them good).

Yeah, A few verses from a Marty Robbins song might do the trick :-)

Reclining Buddha brought back a timely rejoinder with:

Now THAT'S an idea, RB! Maybe she would coo and palpitate to a generous
helping of those F#m7ths played at a lively tempo! By jove, I'll try it!

True disatance does become a factor, mine is about 141 miles one way,
but I think (don't quote me on this) that the average is about 50ish
miles one way. (don't get me started on the M25)

I prefer using the train, but because I go to different areas, it is
not always feasable
