Default REQ: Comments on new "Pick" catalog

Michael,

I doubt that Krause will ever adopt your first suggestion as it's likely to
lead to a great reduction in revenue.

I don't believe that an annual update is impossible. In fact, my addendum to
their catalog, The Banknote Update, is constantly revised and current as of
the beginning of this month. If I'm able to put out something that's better
than Krause and I'm an unpaid "amateur," there's no excuse for them not to
be able to do so with their resources. Unless, of course, they simply view
us as a cash cow to be milked by doing the bare minimum every year.

As for your second point, they're already relying upon unpaid experts. The
problem is they ignore this input. Ask around and you'll find most
contributors to the catalog are frustrated to find that their suggestions
aren't implemented. Despite Krause's filling the SCWPM with little ads
soliciting info and images, very little of this material makes it into
print.

improvement. I too noticed the errors and the stuff that you pointed
out in one of your postings and also in the reviews at Amazon.com. It
seems that while Krause does what it can to keep world coin and paper
guys like us informed, they also (unintentionally) bumble with the
information. Here is what Krause really needs to do to make their
catalogs better and more credible:

1) Allow a 2 year period between each edition of the Std Catalog of
WORLD COINS 20th & 21st Century books and the WORLD PAPER MONEY 1961-
Date book. By doing this the books can be done right and information
can be more accurate without the errors, deletions, and other problems
that is causing the Std Catalog books to slowly lose its credibility.
The current yearly cycle format is too short and puts too much
pressure on the publishers.

2) Krause needs to get a panel of experts who are not on their
payroll to examine the information on the books for accuracy. By
doing this mistakes can be weeded out before the books go into print.

If Krause could implement these ideas, it would help them greatly.
