Us here in the UK have managed fine with a thick and "heavy" £1 coin

Exactly. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the current US dollar
coin. It's only nominally more weighty than quarters, and no one
complains about them.
It always cracks me up -- the exact same people complain that dollar
coins get confused with quarters, and that they're too big and heavy.
You can't have it both ways.
