Default We'll let the market decide

There's an item on page 5 of CoinWorld 6/23/08
about PCGS' new"Genuine Slab" for problem coins. They
will consider authenticating certain damaged coins but they won't
net grade them: "Some people value damage differently"
"We'll let the market decide." --Ron Guth

If markets can put a value on damaged coins without
a grade from TPGs then shouldn't that market be able
to value any coin without their grading opinions?

I collect just one series of coins, comprising just ten coins, in PCGS
slabs. I own one that they rejected as having been cleaned (I am sure that
a couple of the others that I already own have also been cleaned) and would
like to have that one slabbed to match the others. Trouble is, it cost me
$30 for their "cleaned" opinion, but now it will cost me $100 for their
"genuine" opinion. No, thanks.
