Wikipedia tells me its a backshot wheel and reputedly more efficient than
what one might think as one rotating normaly. I guess because the energy in
the approach velocity of the water is much less...

Looks like the best guess as a place - Is still a Boatmans Rd there.

Boatman is a rare surname - some in the Ausie white pages but none it seems
in NZ.

Was a goldmining area.

You are right - Ffestiniog has double Fairlies but the pictured loco Blanche
is not one of them.

Did a photo inspire a stamp design?

Looks like a trophy - but a quick search could not match it to anything.

Globes were not uncommon in aviation trophies of the time - the symbology of
use on the stamp may be coincidental.
