Saint Gaudens double eagle 1908

After picking up some current American Gold and Silver Eagles,
I went back and bought one of the first issues of each.

Then went and bought a - Saint Gaudens - 1908 - no motto -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Gaudens_double_eagle

They really are nice....

Congratulations. My first (and only so far) double eagle is a 1908 NM
Saint. I got it from my girlfriend about 10 years ago. I still have
the Saint, but lost the girlfriend. She's now my wife.

Amen to the profound statement that when you marry her, she's no
longer your girlfriend.

I too have a 1908 NM Saint, slabbed; and my only comment is that it is
a common enough coin and that you should stretch (and be patient) for
the best grade and best eye appeal that you can afford.

Slabbed is a term coin collectors and dealers use to identify a coin
that has been graded by a third party grading service and encapsulated
in a holder. The four major accepted grading services are PCGS, NGC,
ANACS and ICG. Any of the others are considered questionable.

Actually, the market effectively acts as if there were only two
companies, of course...

Agreed, but ANACS and ICG are still considered reputable, though not
as highly as PCGS and NGC.

Note that I didn't specify who the first two (and only two) were [so
you can't "agree" with me, my being careful not to say anything like
what you distinctly stated];

but if you see a coin that is not in one of the top two slabs, one's
first question is "what is wrong with the coin(s) that it (they)
aren't properly slabbed???

Maybe there isn't a problem, but typically there is something.

IMHO, there is very very very clearly a first and a second slab
company as well.
