I once put my name and address in a bottle and threw it into the sea.
10 years later I got a letter from someone in Australia.
It was a fine from their government for littering Sydney beach.

An unexpected reaction. Maybe some strong brandy inside would have saved you
the fine.

BTW, Police did it too, knowing that it's repetition that makes the things
