Mike Weir, 2003 Master Champion was in town today to raise money for a
children's hospital. They will raise about $600,000 in 2 days in a charity
golf tourney. We were at the golf course early, waited for about 45 mins
and Mike showed up. He warmed up on the range, then took some pics with the
tournament players, it cost each group 10, 000 to enter. At the first tee,
my wife wiggled her way right behind him and got my Masters Scorecard
signed. 200 hundred people around the tee and it took her 5 mins after the
warmup to get the auto, I never had a doubt. My friend said she could not
get a picture with him. Within 30 mins, she got a pic with him. She wanted
me to ask to, but I felt he might say no so I thought why wreck a perfect
day...On the 8th tee, I wanted my 11x14 Masters picture signed, with Tiger
putting the green jacket on Mike. My wife wispers "Mr. Weir", he turns and
sees me standing there. He signed my picture and we were set. 2 autos in 8
holes. He was an eager signer, signed lots and was a real cool guy.

Very cool. I see, use the wife! LOL just kidding ... my motto is
"whatever works for in persons" (except lies and deception). But if
you have kids, a broken leg... whatever, use it to your advantage.

I am learning they know false flattery, they don't want to be asked
about a flub or things too far in the past, or the same things over
and over. So just be a fan, ask for a graph and say thanks; and that
works best. Your wife seems to have just been nice, got in and out
and that's really what they love (and a woman tends to soften men
too).

that's really cool...
1 rule, don't use children..the kids should be able to keep their
autographs, not give them to their parent's, uncles or cousins. wives,
well, it's going to both of you, so no worries anyway. but kids should
only be asking for autographs for themselves, parent's shouldn't take
away the experience so that they can keep it.

that's true coz they think there's always a chance that they might be
able to meet up with the same girl later and dork her, even if she's
married

Well, my experience with watching kids is two things...1) they usually
are NOT interested in autographs. but if they are, if it's a kids
thing like Hanna Montana or High School Musical, yeah, let them get
what they want (or for a boy, a hero baseball player etc) 2) they
don't know anything about graphs and don't take care of it, so in a
year or so, it'll be crap, if it's not before they leave the event; so
best to get them to get two if possible (one to keep and one to put
away). half the time our collections, or money we get from them go to
the kids anyway.

I remember meeting Amanda Bynes. There were maybe three adults there
but the rest were kids. I noticed kids doing things like ripping out
notebook paper, or if they had photos they were rolling it up and
playing with it, and some had DVD covers and wrote on the back...
little hearts and stuff like that. They don't really know the value
etc. I know you're not supposed to worry about value, but even if you
don't care, if you ruin the item, you can't take it out and enjoy it
20 years later as a memory of your experience. So it's a weird thing.
On one hand you want them to be kids and do what they want, but on the
other hand you want to watch for them.

I recently got Jack Hanna's autograph. About 80% were kids. I got
the graph for my grandbaby. It's her very first graph. I am making a
scrapbook for her. She won't appreciate it though. Might be 20-30
years old before she will! Well of course now she's not even a year
old so... I am thinking ahead for the future; it's our job as adults.

exactly...it's been my experience that adults use their kids to get
their autographs...it's not cool.
i realize they may not care, but they shouldn't have to...and they
shouldn't be forced to get things for their parents like that...if you
can't ask, then DON'T...
maybe it's my cynicism because i watch several autograph dealers use
their kids to get extra autographs so they can sell them...
there's even a guy out here in l.a. that i YELL at for using his
kids...he kept interrupting me while i was having a conversation and
he wanted to talk...i finally told him that we are talking, give us a
minute.. and he yelled at me saying he wasn't talking to me...we
argued for a few minutes till i finally said "i don't need my kids to
earn my living for me!' that was the end of that...my buddies got a
huge laugh and were calling other collectors for calling him out...but
he yells at his kids for not getting things all the time and someone
finally needed to say something. we do call teh guy "la familia"
because he drags all his kids around to get things signed so he can
sell them...
so maybe i'm just a cynic because i see stuff like this all the time.
i just think kids should be kids, if they WANT to get autographs, they
should be able to...it should NEVER go to the parents for whatever
reason, to me anyway.

Great autograph experience! I never get the chance to meet famous
people here in Mississippi. I did get the chance to meet The Globe
Trotters a long time ago, and got their autograph. I also met some
Girl Singing Group way back in the 60's at the state airport. And I
met Jason Robards while he was filming in Atlanta, GA for a movie on
Abraham Lincoln.

This was kewl.
