Internet & USPS
Internet was always the bête noir of the USPS because the usage of e-mail
reduced very significantly the mailing of letters. I learned with satisfaction that: "Helped by a surge of Christmas parcels, the United States Postal Service reported an operating profit of $1.3 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2016, which ended Dec. 31, 2015." Postmaster General Megan Brennan said that : "Christmas and other holiday greeting card volume dropped by 4.4 percent this fiscal year while packages surged about 18 percent, ... , crediting the pricing of Postal Service parcels for the surge." But Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said the good results ... show the impact of an improving economy and “Internet-driven online shopping,” which boosted parcel growth. The USPS would be doing much better if the politicians had not -=required=- 100% PRE-FUNDING of all retirement possibilities and other 'fees'. I can not find out where the funds are going, perhaps it's as with Social Security payments, into some 'general fund' to balance the US laughable 'Budget'. Meanwhile, other than package services, FIRST CLASS mail is being downgraded. You get to pay for service, but it's becoming slower and slower - it it even arrives! A typical piece of mail from San Fancisco to Seattle now takes FIVE DAYS! Sometimes it comes with a 'detour' to Long Island, NY !!! |

American taxpayers subsidize the USPS at a rate that surpasses the costs associated with any Congressional mandate. He (Robert Shapiro—former Treasury undersecretary and chairman - VM) estimates that, all told, the subsidies and legal monopolies that Congress bestows upon the post office is worth $18 billion annually. ... The Post Office employs 618,000 people—more than any civilian employer besides Wal Mart. Given the pay disparities between the Post Office and private employers, these people would be highly motivated to block any significant change to the current system. That said, the benefits the rest of us bestow on the USPS are enormous. None of this will help you calm down the next time you are waiting on a line that just won’t move at your local post office." http://fortune.com/2015/03/27/us-postal-service/ Victor Manta, PWO ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philatelic Webmasters Organization: http://pwmo.org/ Art on Stamps: http://artonstamps.org/ Romania by Stamps: http://marci-postale.com/ Communism on Stamps: http://reds-on.postalstamps.biz/ Spanish North Africa: http://www.sna-on.postalstamps.biz/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Fish food compared to the other subsidies bestowed upon PRIVATE 'enterprise' and miniscule compared to the 'social programs'. Postal services should be a function of government and not a 'Profit Centre' !!! As always, those with an axe to grind, find ways to make partially true statements. Shapiro, another pollytickle, among them. The fact is: "The direct public subsidy for the Postal Service, which came from tax revenues, was phased out in 1983. USPS does receive indirect subsidies from tax revenues, however, which reimburse the Postal Service for the reduced rates it charges to nonprofit organizations and others." Those 'reduced rates' are ORDERED by CONGRESS and the presidunce. More smokescreen of the manipulations coming from the Executive and Legislature branches. |
