Algiers: WWII question
 

Here is a heavily censored postmark by US Army censor but the same
postmark on the upper 2 stamps is partly visible ending in "R. P." and
on the bottom it looks like it ends in "Y". Can anyone tell from these
letters what the origin of the letter is. I can put up a larger scan
if necessary.

the postmark on the top two stamps ends clearly in R A and not RP. RA
stand for République algérienne.
the mark on the left bottom stamps, looks like a big X, to mark that the
letter has NOT been transported by air mail - this is my explanation.

R.P. stands for Recette Principale, meaning General or Head Post Office. It
is difficult to read the postmark and the dark area on the lower left of the
envelope. Could you post an enlarged view and with less exposure?
for some reason, Paint Shop Pro could not accept the format of the message,
although I thought that .jpg was OK.

I concur with Tony for R.P. ;-)
I would say the bottom part of the cancels ends with an R.
Normally this zone indicates the district (département).
There were three of them in french Algeria:
Alger, Constantine, Oran, named after their main city.

So my best guess, here, is ALGER R.P. / ALGER

I agree with Tony, it is an R.P. cancel over the top stamps. I have
uploaded a split-channel image (with increased saturation) that makes it

G.P.O. is a very good equivalent of R.P., however, I have also seen "recette
principale" used to mean "main delivery" where a mailroom has a "main
delivery" at, say, 10 am and then other incidental deliveries at other
unscheduled times. In federal government mailrooms here in Ottawa I have
seen this arrangement referred to also as e.g. "réception principale à
08h00".

Peter, sorry to disagree. there never WAS a Republique Algerienne (not
until after independence in 1962). The six (?) provinces on the
Mediterranean Sea were considered an integral art of France.

Thanks, this confirms that it is R. P. It is difficult to identify the blue
stamps on the lower left. I think they may be the 1F50 value of the long
1936 set, SG Simplified 128.

Well, Thanks all; Tony V., Tony G., Bruno, Peter for your input into
this cover. The lower blue stamp looks actually abraded to remove the
cancel, a very determined hiding of the origin but odd since the stamps
tell a similar story. This all ties into my other question about
censoring since it seems I have covers from the same period that aren't
censored.
