Scented stamps
 

Scented stamps include, but are not limited to:

(1) Bhutan issued rose stamps on scented paper over
30 years ago, in 1973 (Scott 150-150E)

(2) In 1999, Brazil opted for the smell of burnt wood
on four of their stamps for forest-fire prevention.
(Scott 2717a-d)

(3) In 2000 South Korea issued four violet scented
stamps. (pane of 12 - Scott 2018).

(4) South Korea also issued a floral scented love
stamp several months later.

(5) In 2000, Australia issued scented stamp booklets.
The cover was scented, not the stamps.

(6) The most well-known is the Swiss stamp produced
for the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Association
of Chocolate Manufacturers in 2001

(7) Six jasmine-scented perfume stamps came from
Norfolk Island in 2001 [Scott 733-38].

(8) Also in 2001 you have Norway [Scott 1303-04]
two roses booklet stamps.

(9) In 2001 Hong Kong issued four tea culture stamps
scented with jasmine tea.

(10) In 2001, Great Britain issued a stamp smelling
of eucalyptus [Scott 1996] to celebrate the 100th
anniversary of the Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine.

(11) In Dec 2001, Brazil issued a coffee scented stamp
to promote its coffee industry.

(12) In 2002, South Korea issued four Greetings stamps.
Three of the stamps are scented with smells of the sea,
lilies or roses.

(13) Austria issued its first scented stamp (Scott 1883)
on Valentine's Day 2002. The stamp pictures flowers and
smells like roses.

(14) In 2002, the Netherlands issued a pane of 10 stamps
with six designs picturing and smelling like flowers in
honour of Floriade.

(15) In June 2002, New Caledonia issued 3 scented, coffee
stamps. the stamps picture stages of coffee production.

(16) ROC (Taiwan) issued flower scented stamps in 2002.

(17) In 2002 Switzerland issued a semi-postal set of
scented rose stamps.

(18) Thailand released a series of rose-scented stamps
in commemoration of Saint Valentine's Day in 2003.
The popular rose aroma stamps appeared at post offices
nationwide on Feb 1.

(19) Russia joined the list with the "Gifts of Nature"
series released in August 2003. The circular stamps -
feature strawberries, a pear, a melon, two apples and
a pineapple. Special scented gum on the reverse side
provides the scent on the 630,000 stamps.

"Nobody's done fruit before," Marka Deputy Director
Vadim Bekhterev said. "It's harvest time. It seems right."

(20) In 2003, the Netherlands issued two coffee scented stamps
for "Douwe Egberts" (coffee company) 250 years celebration.

(21) The Belgian Post Office has announced that it will
issue perfumed postal stamps in 2005. The first
Belgian scented stamps, which will smell like roses,
will be released in April of next year to coincide
with the Ghent Floraliën, a spectacular flower show
that takes place every five years. There will be
three different stamps in the series, priced at
44 euro cents.

In 1995 China missed a great opportunity to issue
scented stamps, with its stamp set for the Sweet
scented Osmanthus. (Scott 2563-6)

Blair (TC)

French Polynesia has just released a stamp to promote the island's business in
growing vanilla. The stamp, if I read the press release correctly, smalls like
vanilla.

Obviously, a blatant copy of Kramer's idea for an aftershave fragrance
in an similar dated serial of "Seinfeld" (Smells of the sea)
I remember it well, as that serial influenced my change of underwear
from satin designer boxers and neon thongs, to the much vaunted white cotton
Bond's briefs. :)

I currently use Outlook Express (yes, from Microsoft Co.) and it does spell
checking as well for e-mails as for news postings. Unfortunately it cannot
improve my English writing but this isn't its fault.

One reason for this could be that several spoken languages are less needed
in a huge country. I can easily imagine that in the interior of a circle
having a radius of let's say 1000Km in USA the main spoken language is
English, but here in Europe the situation is totally different. For example,
for my location there are two official languages in a circle of already 3Km,
and 4 national languages in a circle of about 150Km (and I'm not counting
the citizens of other countries, about 20% of the population).
