Does anyone know whether the old UK stamps with 1/2p values are still
valid for postage there?.

Yes they are. However, any odd halfpenny in the TOTAL is ignored. In
other words, two 2-and-a-halfpenny stamps are valid for five pence but
three of them are valid only for seven pence.
