Art in Book - photos
I have an exquisite book of french art. The art is in the form of "photos"
that are attached (glue?) to the pages of the book. These photos are of an extremely high quality and show the various art works in high detail. But I"ve never seen a book where the art was individually attached to each page, not printed as part of the book. It was published in Paris in 1960. Is anyone familiar with this method of publishing? Thanks |

Thanks That was very common in the 19th century. The reason for it is that the print process required to reproduce the pictures (litho or gravure) works best on different paper than the stuff used for type. Sometimes the pictures were printed full-page and the sheets of different paper were bound in with the ordinary ones, sometimes they were glued on. Often there's a protective sheet of tissue over the picture to stop the ink from the ordinary type marking it. This may be either bound in or inserted loose. Its commonest use was for the frontispieces of books which otherwise just had normal print. It didn't necessarily mean high quality, though obviously it wasn't used for very cheap books. A lot of mass-market partworks about art were done that way. It wasn't generally used for the top end of the market, either - for that, you'd just use spare-no-expense paper all the way through. Very occasionally you will come across a book where the pictures are actual photographs, not reproductions done by litho or gravure. ==== j a c k at c a m p i n . m e . u k === http://www.campin.me.uk ==== Jack Campin, 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland == mob 07800 739 557 CD-ROMs and free stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, and Mac logic fonts ****** I killfile Google posts - email me if you want to be whitelisted ****** |
