Baltimore Review

I got there about 10:30 on Friday and went downstairs. It was in the
new part of the convention center, and basically one just one hall w/
some additions, making it look small, but actually very cramped, and I
do think the aisles were smaller than usual. It was, of course, still
quite busy for the whole time I was there until 3:00.

There were certainly some nice items there. One dealer had a $1 bill
error, missing second printing offered for only $500 (two weeks ago in
Chicago there were being offered at $700-750 which is more than I was
willing to pay) which is unfortunate as I had no intention of buying
paper money at this show (having done so just two weeks ago). One of
the exonumia dealers (Steve Hayden, I think, or maybe Tanenbaum) had a
1901(?) Assay Commission Medal (or more accurately rectangular plaque
in silver; McKinley design) in its original box of issue. Rather
noticeable scratch on the reverse, though (and the dealer was up front
about it). But I still think I can find a different year (other than
1977 of course) for considerably less than the mid-to-high three
figure price so I passed on that. He also had an Andre Johnson silver
Indian Peace Medal on display, which I'm sure I've mentioned before,
as it's still impressive. Another dealer had an Eliasberg set of
1899-S gold coins, an accurately graded MS-68 double eagle, an
accurately graded MS-69 eagle, and an overgraded MS-69 half eagle.
ANR had a PCGS MS-64 Pan-Pac half offered (yes, the one in that other
thread). There are a couple of _very light_ scratches on the obverse
that cannot be seen on their website image (on my computer) but I
still think an MS-65 grade could be warranted. Some nice matte proof
gold at various tables. Julian Leidman had a 1944-S quarter struck on
a steel cent blank. Northeast Numismatics (I think) had an Una and
the Lion 5 guineas piece, but unfortunately they were displaying the
obverse!

As to what left the show with me (with, of course, a lighter wallet)
were the following. From Chris McCawley, whose name I probably cannot
spell correctly, I get an 1804 C-12 (crosslet 4, stemless) half cent
in chVg-F. Common variety, but one I needed. Three more 1804's to
go! From the usual supply dealer, I got a 100 pack of half-dollar
size 2x2's.

From Glen Burger I got a really cool error nickel. I've already
decided how it happened (it's complicated, shall we say). But, I'm
going to post a picture to abpn to let the other error collectors see
if they can also figure it out, and in a few days I'll say how I think
it occurred. (Also, if someone wants to post it on the web for those
that don't get abpn, you may do so.) Also, the slab description won't
help, as that is quite laughable and totally meaningless (and the
grade is all wrong, too). But what would you expect from the new PCI?

Finally, at ANR's table I bought a copy of Dave Bowers's new Morgan
dollar book and got to meet him personally (and get my copy signed by
him). I also got their new publications, _The Numismatic Sun_ (think
_Rare Coin Review_ under a different title, though not yet quite at
the level of old RCR's) and one newsletter type publication whose name
slips me at present. Much better than "Bowers and Merena's" new
newsletter _Numisma_ which I recently got (which IMO was downright
pathetic).

Also went down to the Fells Point area and got a couple of CD's I
could oddly not find in Chicago.

Finally, a couple of days later at a local bookstore I found out that
the second edition of the PCGS grading guide (and in smaller less
important letters counterfeit detection) is already out and got a
copy.

Ed,

Which 3 1804s are left for you to collect? Let me venture a guess: C2, C4
& C7.

I'll guess C1, C2, "C3"

Bruce (Same ones I'm looking for)

Have you seen lot #26 of the 2004 EAC Sale catalog yet? It's a nice
looking G5 "C3". Also a VF35 C1 on the block.

Just got the catalog in todays mail. Yes, that "c3" would look good in my
collection. But I'm looking for a nicer C1...and looking...and looking.

Well, I of course need C-2 and C-4 (and I should eventually be
able to get the second of those, but C-2 I can only get if I
cherry it.) The third 1804 I need is the C-10. I don't consider
the C-3 as a necessary variety but just a die state (important
nonetheless) of C-5, and I'm not yet a die state collector. No,
not a die state collector at all. Not one bit.

(Hmm... those 1803 C-2's in state 7.0 sure are interesting,
aren't they?)
