Nickel-medal sets by
[email protected]
I received my new nickel-medal sets today. I can't believe that we
would pay more than $5 for these things. I see they are selling for
$60-70 on eBay. Surprising. The medal looks like something in a kid's
game.
I do like the nickels. They are very handsome.

Things that make you say "doh!" by
[email protected]
This weekend a 1878 7/8 TF Morgan came in the mail. I sat down with my
VAM book and microscope and went to work on it. It didn't fit any of
the VAMs. I spent a couple of hours on it, trying to imagine the coin
into one VAM or another. It was a weak variety with mere spots of the
original TF's...

Damaged coins on eBay by
[email protected]
The past couple of weeks have been bad for me on eBay. I've had to
return coins three times. Today was the worst. I had bought a roll of
1890-S Morgans that were supposed to be choice/gem BU. I checked them
today. All the ones I looked at were cleaned and badly scratched --
totally ungradable.
The...

1831 Capped bust half by
[email protected]
We're looking at this coin on another group. It ends today. Beautiful
1831 capped bust half. Do you think it is the real thing?
http://cgi.ebay.com/1831-CAPPED-BUST-HALF-DOLLAR_W0QQitemZ8339635739QQcategoryZ11969QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
If it isn't real, it is a very good copy.

Any ideas on the surface of this 1878 7/8 Morgan?

it is polished? Or just very good mirrors? Of...

PCGS did not grade this MS 63 by

I suspect that someone has found a way to substitute, since the Morgan
is cleaned, worn, and has rim damage. I'm sending to PCGS for
verification.
MS63. Yeah, right.

1893-S Morgan by
[email protected]
It's ugly and looks like a fake to me. The date and mint mark look
wrong. Any thoughts?

1882-CC Morgan comes back from PCGS by
[email protected]
I mentioned buying a raw 1882-CC Morgan on eBay that had what looked like a
major chin ding. It had been so inexpensive that I couldn't resist, even
though I had regretted the purchase... until the coin came in the mail and
the ding turned out to be minor.
PCGS obviously thought the same thing....

Selling the same coin twice by

I was watching this auction last night, considering a AU bid.

It looked like a nice key date Morgan that in BU would go for $800+.
Fortunately, before I bid I checked the feedback to...

Unusual 1884-O/O Morgan by
[email protected]
I got an unusual 1884 Morgan in today. I expected one of the O/O VAMS,
but I couldn't diagnose which VAM it was easily. It looked like it
could have been one of four of them. Then I noticed that everything on
the reverse was doubled, tripled, and quadrupled. All the words are
obvious overstamps....

Live auction by
[email protected]
I just returned from a live auction. There were the most common, worn
coins going for astronimical prices. There were silver eagle proofs of
several years that had been polished to look like plastic. There were
17 worn Barber dimes with one semi-key date (a polished coin) that went
for $65 for the...

When I see a nice raw key... by
[email protected]
....I wonder why it isn't in a slab. There have been many attractive
looking key date Morgans offered on eBay. Many of the coins look like
they could grade MS 64 or 65. But that begs the question why they
aren't in a slab, since the cost would be only a fraction of the coin
price and would help...

Visit to Antique Store by
[email protected]
We dropped by an antique store today. They have a case of Morgans and
Peace dollars and spent some time browsing. All but one of them was
polished brightly. It looked like someone had gotten some silver polish
and a rag and buffed them until they glistened. There was one lone
1900-P that still had...

Good use for my 1900 Morgan by
[email protected]
I figured out what to do with my orphan 1900 Morgan that I rescued at
the antique shop yesterday. I am going to put it and a few other things
on charity auction next week, with 90% of the money going to Katrina
relief efforts (and the rest going to eBay and PayPal). Maybe some
other sellers here...

Morgan roll holders, separate coin chambers by
[email protected]
I've seen some silver dollar roll "tubes" on television. The holder
opens lengthwise and has grooves for individual coins that keeps the
coins from touching each other. Does anyone know where I can buy these
holders? I'm putting together some rolls of Morgans that are, IMO, 64+,
so don't want them...
