Obama to Russia - Go ahead and bomb us, I won't stop you! by Scurvy Dog[_2_]
Obama heeded the call of his masters in the Kremlin and announced that the USA would not use its nuclear weapons EVEN IF ATTACKED. So go ahead Russia, bomb New York - Obama won't do a goddamn thing. Obama must be impeached and put on trial for what he is - a traitor.

Dr. Who by Pangarune Corner
I came across a little gem locally... In good shape, spine fine and subbing to extremities, several loose but present pages, a copy of the Armada Paperback of "Dr. Who in an Exciting Adventure with the Daleks" by David Whitaker. A split on the spin (no other spine damage) and pages 89 to 94 loose...

Detective Book Club oddity by Jim[_2_]
I picked up today a "collector's item" published by the Detective Book Club (aka Walter Black, Roslyn, NY). It was one of their three-in-one mystery collections, but bound in a heavy blue leather or leatherette, with gilt ends and a ribbon marker. The three books a - Erle Stanley Gardner, THE...

Washed Books ? by [email protected]
Hi RCB-ers, A rare book seller told me that a 400-year old book (that I just found) was washed and rebound in the XIX century, to fit the style of the library of the new owner. He said this was a common practice back then. Is this true ? How does that affect the book condition and book value ?

uncollected Salinger and his ravening lawyers by Jack Campin - bogus address
We (i.e. the charity shop I work for) have been given a copy of the second printing of The Complete Uncollected Stories of J.D. Salinger. Fine condition. Probably worth us sending it for auction (we don't do EBay for corporate reasons) - if an auction house will take it. It isn't all that rare,...

Preserving books against mold? by Alan Meyer
I have a collection of several thousand books in a part of my house that gets too humid in the summer time. The books can get moldy. I've dealt with that in the past with dehumidification, but in the last year electricity costs have gone through the roof in my state and it's getting really...

A crying shame by Bud Webster
Yesterday I received a book I'd won on eBay. Nothing remarkable about that, of course, but this was the Pulphouse limited-&-signed hardcover collection by Damon Knight, _God's Nose_ from 1991. Still nothing *really* special - not the leatherbound, no original material, and at 300 copies not...

You want weird? I got weird for yez. by Bud Webster
I got an e-mail out of the blue from someone I've never heard of before with "R. A. Lafferty" as the subject line. I almost deleted it unread, but I'm glad I didn't. In part, he asked: "I'm searching for a 'Bud Webster' who back on 8/16/81 wrote a inscription on a FEP of a book to a individual...

Career Thanks Owed To....... by [email protected]
I think I've finally realised why I dislike John Pelan so much. It's because he says things like this (a comment posted by him in alt.horror.cthulhu today): "I've helped launch more careers than you've had pieces of ass." I don't think it's possible to be more sexist and egocentric in...

General rule for added value of autograph? by Billy Bob
Is there any general rule as to how much more a book is worth if it is signed by the author? Say worth 50% more or something? (This would be for most cases where the author is not a "super famous" person like a president, sports legend, etc.)

Legal Letter via-a-vis HWA trustee John Pelan's Infamous Lie by Shelf Space
First up, let me point out that I am only posting this because John Pelan is now trying to rewrite recent history, by claiming that I forged emails from his former ISP in which they confirmed Pelan had lied about owning shares in their company. I certainly did not do this, and invite any interested...

"American Gods" question by [email protected]
Does anyone know what the true first of Gaiman's "American Gods" is? I see that both US and UK editions came out in 2001. A search on abebooks.com did not shed any light on this issue, as both editions were offered as "firsts." The U.S. edition precedes by a few weeks. For future...

Book Restoration by [email protected]
How much improvement can be made to a book (let's say ex-lib) without so stating in the ad? Removal of an endpaper? Sanding down (and away) of a "Discard" stamp? Replcing a page carefully? Any guidelines? Mention all modifications form purchase or before? Willow

Second edition of Rare book by Rick Kalamaya
One of the best, and nicest, dealers I have ever patronized is Alan Ahearn at Quill and Brush. Recently I received their catalog and one of the offerings was a second/third edition of The Sun Also Rises for $250. We all know the first has the "stoppped" with 3 p's. Then I suppose the second has...
