Third-party Amazon transactions by David Ames[_2_]
A desired book had three listed sellers on Amazon. The first was unable to ship within Amazon's suggested time period and cancelled the order. (Probably needed it till the end of the semester.) The second did not respond at all. It turns out that the seller had no transactions within the past...

Library sale by J[_2_]
Yesterday I went to the Library sale in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. I'd gone to this event a few years ago, and not done especially well, but I thought I'd give it another try. This time I came away with a 25- cent paperback that I was anxious to read, and four excellent condition hardcovers (all...

Modern Library Opinion by krik999
Hi. I just saw the collection of an avid Modern Library collector. The collection, over 2000 books (probably a little more than 800 titles) was impressive- he had numerous copies of titles, some rarer illustrated editions with slipcase, a large majority of first editions and even had the more...

Book manufacturing error. What to do about a book with pages uncut/unseparated at the bottom? by nelson family
I have a book that has rough cut pages on two edges (side and bottom). The tops of the pages are smoothly/uniformly cut. The real dilemma is a manufacturing error at the bottom of the pages. Nearly every other set of adjoining pages have never been separated/cut apart, so you can't pull them apart...

Book Auction by Francis A. Miniter[_2_]
A week ago, I went to a book auction in New London, Connecticut. It was of the type they call a "pick auction". There were thousands of books, divided up onto separate tables for each source (estate, dealer, etc.) and the potential buyers put together lots of up to ten items per lot on which...

To Kill a Mockingbird - More than one BCE? by Francis A. Miniter
Six years ago, Jeff Armstrong posted the following list of points of comparison for a regular edition and a BCE. "I have a copy of the first edition and one of the BC's as well. I would be glad to give you as much as I can, but I'm afraid I have no idea what "detentions" are ... help me...

Elizabeth and Her German Garden, Illustrated Edition 1900 by Francis A. Miniter[_2_]
I bought this in a lot at auction recently. No name on the cover or the title page. But it quickly turned out that the book was written by Elizabeth von Arnim, who had a very interesting life indeed. She was born (1866) Mary Annette Beauchamp in Australia, to British parents who, three years...

Exclamation
General Collecting Question by SoulBrother
In the last year or so I found myself purchasing large format art and photography books. Many of those purchases have been made online and I'm discovering games that online sellers play. Many of these sellers list items in the wrong condition hoping that the buyer won't complain. Today I received...

Guy using handheld to price used books? by Dave C
I have noticed a couple of mysterious people with handheld devices hunting through the stacks at our library's used book sale. They open selected books and then key some information into their handhelds. In most cases they return the book to the shelf. Sometimes they buy a book. What the heck...

Overlooked Book - Modern Library First of Catcher in the Rye by Francis A. Miniter[_2_]
A few months ago, I bought a box of books sight unseen for a small amount. It contained 15 - 20 Modern Library books along with a few others. I did not pay a lot of attention to those books, but put some on the shelves and set others aside to file away in the extras area. One of those that...
