The TES collection - looking for info by Roger Hunt
Greetings r.c.s.d I wonder if anyone knows .... Here I have a printed catalogue of the Christie's sale, in 1995, of the TES collection of GB QV line-engraved Pennies. It was a breathtakingly stunning collection of many hundreds of lots, almost entirely Pennies - trials, plate proofs, imprimaturs,...

Postmark Query. by Rod
G'day Geezer, from the information I have available, it does not match any UK format. 44 is allocated to "Tideswell" however the bar format does not match. The GB have horiz bars, if you will, and vert bars around the numbers. Naturally, I will stand corrected by those with greater knowledge.

Peccavi. by [email protected]
Peter I think that was not meant to be offensive - merely a ( humerous ) comment as to what would be referred to by an upper-class Brit at the time ( which WAS meant to be offensive! ). One would not use the term "Boche" other than in the WW1 context - and then as a swipe at the aforementioned...

R..I.P. Henry Hahn by Jay T. Carrigan
Henry Hahn, one of my oldest philatelic friends and mentors, and the person who pushed me to become an APS philatelic judge, died unexpectedly yesterday morning at his home in Fairfax, Virginia. I feel very fortunate that I was able to see him just last weekend at the NAPEX show. Henry was a...

Stamps with large hole punched in center [Tanganyika] by gordon curry
I have a nice set of Tanganyika hi values SC 39-44 all cancelled. But the 3 & 5 shilling stamps have a neat quarter inch hole in the center. Can anyone tell me what this is called? Is it a form of cancellation? Does it reduce the value of the stamp? Gordon

Conchology : The delicate Gastropod of Emperors. by Rodney
I found the reference I was after re the purple dye of the robes of Roman Senators and Emperors, shown on Mette's example of St Zeno. The delicate gastropod, the aptly named "Murex Triremus" (compare the shell with the ship/galley to appreciate the marvellous connection) as shown on the 2L value...
