First Edition Reprints by
Sam
A couple of years ago I purchased a copy of "Showboat" on eBay. I
paid a modest amount for it and was surprised when it arrived - it was
mint - tight and brand new. The dust jacket could have been printed
only weeks before it seemed. It has the requisite points for a first
printing, but I...

Which do you prefer? Good original or nicely rebound? by
Jeff Armstrong
I know as in everything, its a matter of personal taste. However, when
assigning a value to a book, which would have more value ... a good copy in
original covers with faded spine and bumped corners, or a 1/2 leather nicely
rebound copy of the same book. The pair I'm looking at is the...

W.M. Rossetti Signature : Genuine? by
TIA
Hello,
I recently picked up some books from local auction (mostly Victorian
trash) however one book appears to contain the signature of William
Michael Rossetti and a charming inscription to his daughter Olive?
The book is titled: 'La Poesie Napoleon III Paris 1853'
I wonder if there is anyone...

Where is a good bookbinder by
Jeff Armstrong
I have had several books re-bound by a local bookbinder. I'm quite happy
with the results, but I thought I'd ask if there are others in this group
that would recommend another bookbinder. I pay about $100 for 1/2 leather
binding and $35 for a cloth binding. Is there someone you would...

Which do you prefer? Good original or nicely rebound? by
Jerry Morris
Jeff,
The copy in the original binding would have the most value to a
collector of RLS's first editions.
There are some people who would prefer the copy that's rebound in
leather over the copy in original boards simply because the leather copy
looks better. I know of one person who only...

Let's Hear it for the First Addition by
Jerry Morris
Jon Meyers, in a thread he recently posted to the rec.collecting.books
newsgroup, suggested it was way past time to replace the term, "first
edition," with the term, "first printing."* I agree.* I also think
it is time we hear more about the use of the first addition as well.
*
First additions are...

Library Book by
Ralph Meeker
Probably a silly question, but ... I checked a book out
of the library (Blood Dance by Joe R. Lansdale, if you
absolutely must know) that shows an original price tag
of $400.00 on the rear dust cover. In the front , it is signed
by the author and has a number indicating it is one of some
1000...

REPOST: rec.collecting.books FAQ by
Jon Meyers
# 1.1 What is REC.COLLECTING.BOOKS?
* It is an unmoderated Usenet newsgroup devoted to discussion and
questions related to all aspects of book collecting. View the charter at
http://www.rcbfaq.com/charter.html for details.
# 1.2 How Do I Participate?
* The best way is probably using a dedicated...

Out with "first edition", in with "first printing"? by
Jon Meyers
Has the time come--or is the time long past--to stop using the shortcut
"first edition" as the iconic term for the object of most collectors'
desires?
Book collecting & used bookselling no longer operate like closed
communities, and, whereas using "first edition" when one really means
"first...
