Looking Back #36 - Why Should not Philately Live? by
Blair (TC)
Why Should not Philately Live?
In all seriousness we ask it: Why should philately
not live? Does it deserve to live? What should it
possess to make it worthy to live? That philately
may live and grow, until from sea to sea, from land
to land, the fair folds of its banner may be wafted
on the...

Conditionitis
Where a rigid standard of perfection condition
in United States stamps becomes the all-important
governing feature in the formation of the collection,
the underlying propulsion is invariably the financial
angle, the resale value, the expected profit.
I think this is generally...

US query by
Rodney
Somebody discussed this recently suggesting
the black line (here shown on the top) indicates the stamp
from a booklet printing.
http://cjoint.com/data/itoJLzJH0e.htm
Would this be the case here? only I cannot find a booklet
listing for this issue in my aged Scott Cat.
Thanks

Help with Cat of Russian Zepp Cover. by
George
I came across a cover in a box that I acquired lately. There was a
cutting from a 1972 auction catalog that says "No. Pole Issue Imperf
on cover with Zeppelin "Malyguin" and Leningrad pmks. Priced in
1968 "Seiger" Zepp Cat DM 200.00."
The cover can be seen...

Seeing grill marks? by
Dave Hinz
I've got a US stamp I'm unclear on identifying. It was filed as a Scott
#93, which would indicate a grill. I don't see a grill, on the front or
the back, even with a light held at an angle to the surface. Is there
another way to identify it as a #93 rather than a #73? Watermark
techniques or...

Upside Down Stamp Protest
A recent letter in the Voice of the People column
in the New York Herald-Tribune suggested that all
of those who oppose the present Washington
administration might manifest this disapproval by
turning their stamps upside down on all their mail
matter.
If the movement...

Steve Lodge
I have a stock page of pre-war Malaya and Japanese occupation stamps which I
would like to reference and value. Could anyone direct me to a website
specialising in this area which displays pictures of stamps.
Many thanks, Steve.

Thematics~a passing critique by
Rodney
A read for you for a cold wintery day,
I find it interesting to hear how the judges comment
on exhibits.
Nothing really heavy here, perhaps for the entry level student.

Forget philately -- deltiology, here I come! by

Stamps shmamps! From now on, it's postcards for me! Well, not really,
but this is kind of amazing....
About six weeks ago I was contacted by a photo researcher of a U.S.
topical magazine about the Civil War and the Old West. She had found my
web page about my home town, Silver City, New Mexico,...

(US) Certified Mail Stamp
http://i11.ebayimg.com/03/i/04/09/f4/1a_1_b.JPG
I think we may well assume that the recent
15=A2 Certified Mail stamp was an issue never
intended for permanency and that within a
comparatively short time, perhaps a year
or so, it will be discontinued as unnecessary.

Curiosity Corner #195: a legitimate excuse to keep the selvedge by
Rodney
Mourning stamps, generally, are characterised by their colour
black or purple, and, in the most part, by the inclusion of a black
border around the stamp.
In this emancipation commemorative, converted to a memorial,
an inscription was added to each stamp, but the black stamp border
was relegated...
