Les Miserables by
Francis A. Miniter
I picked up a two volume set of Hugo's Les Miserables this weekend. I have done
some research and have not been able to find it anywhere. (I checked
addall.com, the LoC, Karlsruhe, etc.)
It was published by William L. Allison & Co., New York. No date shown. The
binding is quarter leather...

Collecting categories by
Were Tiger
When I began collecting in the 1960s, the most common collecting
category after modern firsts was Americana. That could be general,
defined by period or theme . There does not seem to be as much of that, at
least at New York book fairs. Two pioneers, batting the ball back and
forth between them...

Book Fair in New York by
Annibale
I have missed a lot of book fairs over the past three years, so I got
to one, finally, I think the name is something like the Westside Loft
Book Fair.
They have a maximum number of 50 dealers. No one else can be in. For
the most part they replicate each other. Most of them deal heavily in
modern...

Value of UK first of "The Last Coyote" and other Connellys by
Booked
Thank you for the 2 thoughtful answers to my previous post re values
of firsts, eBay, dealers. Now I have a specific example to discuss. I
have a VF UK first copy of Michael Connelly's "The Last Coyote".
I asked a local in town dealer about its possible worth and he said he
wouldn't go out of his...

OT (maybe not!) Real & Perceived Values of First Editions, eBay, booksellers by
Booked
OK, I hope someone here (especially a book seller) can indulge me a
bit and answer (or at least speculate on) the following questions.
1.) why is there such a HUGE range in dealer prices for identically
graded books? (just check any fairly common first, say Postmortem
$500- $1500 + for F/F) I...

Smith College Book Sale Disappointing by
Francis A. Miniter
Granted I did not get there until 3:15 the first day, so I missed the initial
rush. But they had advertised 80,000 books. I found 10 that I wanted enough to
buy. The lighting in the elderly mansion where the sale was held was abysmal.
The staff had to put up harsh, glaring worklamps clamped...

Weasel-Word Listers by
[email protected]
Ever get annoyed by weasel-word listers? I do.
Here are a few of common weasel-words
which I find especially offensive.
Perhaps the most abused weasel words of all
are simply that helpful little modal auxiliary
verb "may." There is no need to expatiate
on this at length when one simple...

Reddish stains along the upper border of books by
Pereira de Lisboa
Hi,
a few books in my personal library have some strange reddish stains
along the upper border. I've just posted on Flickr some photos about
this issue: see http://www.flickr.com/photos/7780863@N06/ The books
are 5-6 years old. What could be the cause? Mould, moisture, bad
quality paper? Must I...

Dr. Delmer Eugene Croft -- More Information? by
RS
Does anyone have any more information on Dr. Delmer Eugene Croft of
New Haven, Connecticut? He wrote some positive thinking type booklets
around 1915-1922.
There is literally nothing about him I can find on the Internet, and I
was wondering if anyone
has come across his name before or might have...

Question about $0.01 used book prices on Amazon by
Nobody
Can anyone explain how can it be worth it for anybody to sell used books for
$0.01 on Amazon? Even considering shipping allowance seller still has to go
through the trouble of packing it, printing a label, shipping and also
paying some fee to Amazon - all out of total $3.50. Where is the profit...

Goodwill Pricing by
krik999
At my local Goodwill the lady in charge of pricing books has promoted
herself to "book expert" They have taken to the practice of looking books
up on ABE taking the highest priced listing (and I think we all know how
prices range on ABE), printing it out and placing it in the book and then...
