What is a fanboy? by
Haunted River
Pelan frequently makes gratuituous references to homosexual acts and
fanboys when attacking his enemies. We also know that has a dark
passion for sadistic horror fiction, and a questionable interest in
the Greek sport of male wrestling. Oh, and he used to be a nightclub
bouncer.....
I don't quite...

LEARN ABOUT HOW OUR MINDS ARE CONTROLLED BY BIG MEDIA by
James
HELLO EVERYONE, I WONDER IF WE ARE ALL A BEWILDERED HERD SOMEHOW.
AFTER READING THIS BOOK THE BEWILDERED HERD ON MEDIA COVERAGE OF
INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS AND PUBLIC OPINION I STARTED TO THINK
DIFFERENTLY ABOUT THINGS. MAYBE WE ARE ALL JUST PRE-GOVERNED BY
FACTORS THAT ARE BEYOND OUR CONTROL AND...

Broad humor by
Jon Meyers
After running across one example of a particular typo in an ABE listing, I
sought out some more, with the results below:
-- The hard broads have minor wear on the top and bottom...
-- ...light stains on the front and back broads...
-- Tan and brown broads w/ bright metallic-orange spine...

The Seven Story Mountain First Edition points? by
Telicalbook
I found a beautifully perserved first edition of this book. The white cloth
book states "First Edition" and the dust jacket has the Trappists at work in
the fields with the caption "author on left" but
has no mention of the author receiving the Catholic Press Association award.
If it did have...

"Second Printing before Publication" by

"Second Printing before Publication" -- what does this mean? I'm looking at
Cheever's Falconer, but I have also seen it on other books.

Apology for "word-processo" was New "dark and stormy night" discovery! by
Bill Palmer
Sorry for the careless word-processo. For
the newbies, a "word-processo" is any sort
of careless error generally peculiar to word
processing rather than old-time typing, where
typos usually follow certain other patterns.
In this case. When the funny-little-wilhelp-man
decided to put...

New "dark and stormy night" discovery! by
Bill Palmer
The book I began reading this evening was
supposed to be a thriller and not a comedy
effort. Nonetheless, but the author cracked
me up on the first line. Actually, it did
not even take the entire first line. To quote:
One dark and stormy night...
Hmm...I thought, where have I heard THAT

Latest find: Benjamin Franklin memoirs, etc. by
BookEditions
At the FOL bookstore today, for 25 cents each, I picked up four volumes from
the 1809 printing, which I believe was the first, of Benjamin Franklin's
memoirs and writings which were taken from his original manuscripts and
published by his son. Three of the volumes are in full leather, although...

bleach and books by
gr
As a newcomer to this group, I read with some interest a recent
discussion about the use of bleach (chlorine assumed) to clean the edges
of a book.
I noted a number of outraged responses, and this is reasonable for rare
books, but the individual was working with what he considered an
expendable...

How to unstick pages? by
gr
This seems to be the correct newsgroup to ask this question, please
direct me elsewhere if I have chosen incorrectly.
I have an equipment manual, printed on semi glossy paper (similar to
magazines) and it has gotten wet in the past (and are now completely
dry) so that the pages in the center 2/3...

Rand McNally Elf Books by
SuperDC
Are the Rand McNally Elf books a real collector's item? I found some
up in an attic and have done some searching on the web. Does anyone
have any info about them and what they are worth?
Thanks,
Susan

A Bookbuying Trip - Part 2 by
Tom L-M
My trip to Hay on Wye was cancelled - weather looked awful! So instead, a
week later, I travelled from Dorset to Lynton in North Devon, via a good
deal of bookshops.
I started off in Bridport with 'Bridport Old Books', a lovely shop -
unfortunately one of the partners, Stephen Clarke of Clearwater...

My Excellent Summer Continues by
Francis A. Miniter
I accidentally happened upon an estate sale today (Sunday)
and walked away with 16 books, among them:
Robert W. Service, "Ballads of A Cheechako", NY: Barse &
Hopkins (1909) which may or may not be an
American First, as there seems to be some claim that
Edward Stern & Co, Phila., had that...

GLIMPSES OF A MYSTERY by
GLIMPSES OF A MYSTERY
GLIMPSES OF A MYSTERY
Preface
How is it possible for a small lily flower to contain an ocean? Does it not sound absurd? Like sheer madness? Yet it is true that the desire of our individual ego is to be the master of everything. This is its dharma. The limitless thirst of our doer "I" wants all....

Art book sets by
Gregg P.
I happened upon a set of Art books, with color plates, in near mint
condition, with dust jackets, etc, in near mint conditionm as well--no
tears, smudges, dirt, etc. My question: Is there a market for sets like
this?
All on-topic replies welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Gregg
