Remove smoke stains with rubbing alcohol? by
[email protected]
Hi, I have an old dirty encyclopedia collection (Universalis
Encyclopedia, about 40 years old) covered with a layer of nicotine. I
tried to remove the stains with rubbing alcohol on one of the books and
it seem to work fine (though it seems to discolor the silver logos on
it). Before I try it on...

How many copies printed in 1778? by
Billy Bob
How many copies of a book would typically have been printed in one year in
1778? (I'm just curious.)
I'm looking at books printed around 1778 in London. Many of the books I am
seeing say printed for this person or printed for that person. This sounds
radically different from the way books are...

Alibris customer service - nonexistent? by
Jeremy Goldbloom
Has anybody else run into the same problem with buying books from
ALIBRIS.
After 30 days waiting for delivery, I tried to email them. Have now
repeated this 4 times. All I get is their automated suggestions junk.
Cannot contact a human there. Perhaps they don't employ any.

Finding date books were published by
DS
Hi everyone.
I'm new to this whole book collecting thing. I notice that most
people seem to be able to tell when books were published. If it
indicates it on the inside, I can usually tell, but what if it
doesn't? Can anyone steer me in the direction of any resources to
find the date of...

F.E.Grafton- Can their 1sts be identified? by
Matthew Hill
Yesterday I picked up a copy of Chiniquy's "The Priest, The Woman, and The
Confessional". Published by F.E. Grafton of Montreal in 1875. A bit of
research reveals that Grafton published in that year what was apparently
the first North American edition of this book which had been published...

Bit of a Brag and a Question about Care by
Francis A. Miniter
At a tag sale I picked up a copy of vol. 1 of Max Rooses's "Rubens", Lippincott,
1904, large quarto size with gilt top edge.
The only problem is that the quarter leather covering the spine, while attached
to the front board has come loose from the leather attached to the back board.
I do not want...

To All My Friends ( AWOL Nutcase) by
BobFinnan.com
Franklin Hummel sez:
I hope so, Mr. Pelan. I think you are a reasonable poster...
Sorry my friend but you think wrong.
Pelan is anything but reasonable.
He threatens and flames anyone who disagrees with in the slightest
degree.
He's a bully and a blowhard and, ultimately, a coward.
Cheers,
Bob

Wake Up People - Cannibal Hoax! by
Shelf Space
Did no one bother to check the posting history of the chap looking for
cannibal books?
You've all cross-posted your messages to some vile
sex.snuff.cannibalism discussion site. Serves you right if your email
addresses get passed to some obscure agency who monitor deviant or
criminal internet...

Serendipity with Photo Books by
William M. Klimon
As I've mentioned this is not an area I collect in, but I have from time to
time made a fortuitous find, most recently a first edition of Mary Ellen
Mark's first book Passport (1974).
Over the years I've found a second edition (1968) of Robert Frank's seminal
The Americans, with an introduction by...

Career Thanks Owed To....... by
[email protected]
I think I've finally realised why I dislike John Pelan so much. It's
because he says things like this (a comment posted by him in
alt.horror.cthulhu today):
"I've helped launch more careers than you've had pieces of ass."
I don't think it's possible to be more sexist and egocentric in...

Drats - Foiled Again by
Francis A. Miniter
Today I picked up a collection of Dashiell Hammett short stories, published
posthumously with an introduction by Lillian Hellman, under the title "The Big
Knockover", Random House (1966). On the copyright page it stated "First
Printing", so I grabbed it. On looking at it more carefully at home, I...

Question regarding quotations by
Monboddo
Books frequently have a quotation from a famous individual or from another book on a page that follows the title. The quotation supposedly gives an idea of the nature of the book or some idea of the story line. Doe this have a name or some designation? How would it be identified?
I would...
