SIMON BARUCH 1892 THE USES OF WATER IN MODERN MEDICINE by tracyp
I have an 1892 hardcover copy of Simon Baruch's "The Uses Of Water In Modern Medicine, Vol. I", George S. Davis publisher. I can't find a reference/listing for it anywhere. On abebooks, the earliest Baruch is the 1898 "Principles and Practice of Hydrotherapy". Where can I find out more about it,...

Quasi-tissue guards? by my-wings
I picked up a copy of *Gun Engraving Review* today, and the color plates in the front of the book are protected by a nearly transparent sheet of something that looks like very thin, textured wax paper rather than tissue. Does anyone know if there is a special name for this kind of picture guard...

My First book signing by Carney Wilde
I attended my first book signing today 7/5, for two authors, Lawrence Block (whom I collect) and Peter Blauner. The event was scheduled as an outdoor lunchtime signing at the Bryant Park Reading Room in NYC, but had to be moved indoors to the Coliseum Bookstore across the street due to the weather....

I recently bought "Eustace and Hilda" by L.P. Hartley, and it was published by Stein and Day as part of their "In Print" series, designed to bring back into print "influential Twentieth-Century works." Does anyone know where I can find a list of the books published in this series? Thanks in...

Odd non-response from dealer by David Ames
I learned of a textbook used at a major university. Wondering about the subject of the textbook, I searched bookfinder.com to seek a prior edition and to consider whether I might want to enroll. I posted an inquiry to an alibris.com dealer, using Alibris' form. What I got back was not a...

Chicago's Brandeis book sale: whither the books? by [email protected]
The Brandeis book sale held in Skokie last month was announced to be the last. It was by far the largest used book sale in the Chicago area, and must have been one of the largest in the world. I was never very happy with its pricing and selection, but it's going to leave a big hole. Where do you...

Van Wyck Mason - Seeds of Murder by [email protected]
Hello, I recently bought an old copy of Van Wyck Mason's Seeds of Murder. It says it was published in 1930 by Crime Club, however, it doesn't state "first edition". The seller told me it was a first but I am starting to have doubts. I paid 50.00 for it and want to know if I was duped. I took it to...

Dueling authors.... well, ideas anyway. by Dave
This is a very minor brag, with several questions attached. I purchased a box lot for $5 USD that included a copy of _The Forever War_, Joe Haldeman, 1974 St. Martin's Press. Multiple closed tears in the d/j, esp. at top and bottom of the spine. D/J is rubbed along the spine, bottom and at the...

A serendipitous find by Francis A. Miniter
At a thrift shop, yesterday, a first edition (not the almost identical BCE) with dust jacket in cellophane type protector, of Edwin O'Connor, The Edge of Sadness, (Atlantic, Brown, Little 1961), the book for which he got the Pulitzer Prize. Unfortunately, the jacket cover was affixed with tape...

Removing eraser "pink" and getting rid of pen markings by LiRM
I have a book that I wanted to clean up a bit and erase some ink (standard ball point pen) written down the spine. Being a tad too eager, I tried an eraser (standard pencil type) and although it took off some of the ink, I now have the remnants of the pinkish eraser color. Any ideas on how to...

Book Signing Events by LiRM
Is anyone aware of a web site that offers a comprehensive list of what author's may be signing at what locations? In what I can only describe as a tragedy, here in South Florida, there used to be a few book stores that had authors come in to do readings, signings, etc. With the exception of Books...
