Coin Auctions SLOW this WEEK? by
howard
I have 7 coin related items up for sale (ending tomorrow), so far only 3
individual watchers, no bids.
Usually within one day of ending I have a few bids.
Some of these items are repeats for me, some are competitive with what is
out there, in line with closed auctions.
Perhaps the Easter Holiday...

Bob Hendershott by
Jud
I am sorry to announce that Bob Hendershott died last night at the age
of 106. Bob was very active in the ANA. I attended his 100th birthday
party a few years ago. I can only hope that I do as well at 70 as Bob
did at 100. Numismatics has lost one of its greats.

Trip report: Warning - Book Length! by
zax
Last time, I went to the Baltimore show on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't
very crowded and many of the dealers were packing up or had already left.
It almost seemed like we were among a group of stragglers and the hall gave
the feeling of a department store getting ready to close. Unable to make...

"...., it should have had those phrases, by
Bill Krummel
but did not, causing some to refer to it as the "lawbreaker" coin."
Numismatic News, March 1, 2005, pg.61.
Without reading the article, does anyone know which coin some have referred
to as the "lawbreaker" coin?
For those who do not know and do not subscribe to NN, two clues;
I want one where I...

Did the United Arab Republic ever issue any coins? by
stonej
Background:
http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/U/UntdA1rR1ep.asp
This is not the same as the more well known United Arab Emirates.
I can't find anything in the SCWC for the United Arab Republic
so I assume they didn't issue any coins but sometimes SCWC misses

*ping* Bob H by
Anita
Bob, I tried to email you at the address on the bottom of the message,
but the mail is returned to me as "not allowed." These ISP's are
getting really bossy about what we can and can't do.
I'm not a dealer, but I would be glad to submit the coins and forward
them to you if you need me to. It would...

Let's start a list of references about cleaned, doctored coins... by
Bob Hairgrove
Ater reading this WONDERFUL book, I wonder if there are other books
especially dedicated to grading and/or detecting "doctored" coins
(including cleaned, dipped, tooled, etc.):
"Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection"
John W. Dannreuther, Author
Scott A. Travers, Editor
(c) 1997...

please advise newbie (Morgans and AUs and mints, oh my!!) by
Gorlash
My wife's dad just passed away last weekend. Unknown to us, he'd been an
avid coin collector; in fact, even tho he's retired and on a rather
modest fixed income, his check register shows that he's been spending
$200 - $400 per *month* on coins, mostly from a coin shop just down the
street from...

There have been a few coins struck on planchets which have been
polished or burnished for many years. Some of these are probably
polished accidently by getting caught up in the machinery. Others may
be proof planchets gone astray. Since 1987 the mint apparently
burnishes some planchets but these...
