Little Blue Books? by scotkamins
Folks, I recently discovered a series of numbered books (pamphlets really, about 64 pages each) called the Little Blue Books. These guys started around 1919 and there are around 2,000 titles (more, actually). I think I'd like to start a collection of these. Anybody know where I can buy a large...

What Does it Mean................ by mbbbh
if a book has a publishing company on the cover page (in this case Franklin Publishing Company) and a manufactures name on another page? (Kingsport Press, Inc.) Does this mean one does the editing etc., and the other does the printing?

Question about appraisal resources - 1820s travel journal by Dan Jones
Greetings! I inherited what I believe is a fair copy of a handwritten travel journal written sometime in the 1820s. I suspect it's a fair copy because there isn't a single misspelling, smear, food stain, or anything else that would indicate that it was written while traveling. Of course, the...

Book of Mormon "collectors" (thieves) caught by Kris Baker
I don't know if any of you had heard about the break-in at a local museum, where 11 "firsts" of the Book of Mormon were stolen. It's probably only newsworthy in Utah. Here, it's the biggest thing since Mark Hofmann. So far, one person arrested is someone I'm familiar with. I don't know this...

"Yes, Mary Kennedy, you try and fix things with the BIG boss!" by [email protected]
This is amazing! Although addall.com lists 170 Fredric Wertham items (including magazine articles and books) there is not one copy of his famous anti-comic book screed "Seduction of the Innocent" listed. My prediction: The next fine or near-fine copy with d.j. will be listed at upwards of...

Great book that shows Saddam Hussein as the mass-murderer he really is by [email protected]
Saddam's Secrets by Georges Sada. This book mentions things like Saddam's dreaded Anfal Campaign in the 1980's where the king bum murdered hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds. Plus, stuff like how Saddam (after 1991) was getting very wealthy and powerful again off oil he secretly through Iran! it...

Erle Stanley Gardner publication by Francis A. Miniter
I picked up a 1959 copy of "The Case of the Singing Skirt". The dust jacket said "Morrow" on spine and inner front flap and had the price of $2.95. But when I looked at the title page it said "Walter J. Black" and the copyright page said "Published by special arrangement with William Morrow &...

Wondering how rare/valuable some books are? by [email protected]
Hello, I am new to this group and I have always read a lot. I have recently started getting into collecting, buying and selling older books. I just picked up some books this weekend and I was wondering if any one could give me some insight into them as collectables. THE ESSAYS OF MICHEL DE...

Books on demand - Reprints of old books? by Billy Bob
I sometimes see "Book-on-Demand reprint" for old books I am looking for. This is good because I can read some old books without having to pay thousands of dollars for the book. I'm wondering if there are reprints available for some of the older books I am looking for, but I just need to find the...

rec.collecting.books.moderated by [email protected]
If I may wax slightly self-important for a moment, I do believe one of the reasons this group has gone downhill is that I stopped acting as "Bad Cop" when I moved into my new house and changed ISPs several months ago. As many old-timers may remember, I used to post the "NO FS" message quite...

A Happy Find by Francis A. Miniter
Two days ago, I went to a hearing in Waterbury, Connecticut, and exited from the highway to the city by a different route than usual. It led me past a bookstore that I had not known about before - The John Bales Book Company. So much later in the day, after the hearing was over, I went over...

A challenge: the next Classics by BookEditions
For those of you who collect books, or just love fiction in general, I hope this may start an interesting new thread for discussion: Any book collector has a "what if" thought: what if I had been able to buy a first issue of "To Kill a Mockingbird" fresh off the press all those years ago. Or...

"misuse" of priority box - what's The Law? by Scot Kamins
Folks, From time to time (as in another current thread) the issue of using Priority Mail boxes for media mail purposes comes up for discussion. The question is whether using these boxes for other-than priority mail is against the law. There MUST be lawyers who read this newsgroup. Will someone...

A different kind of price gouger by palmer.william
Usually when we refer to a book dealer as a price gouger, we mean that he tries to squeeze out every penny he can on every book he sells. Let me tell you about someone far worse than your garden variety price gouger-- a genial Jack the Ripper of paperbacks who has literally gouged out the prices...

Holograph or facsimile? by John Yamamoto-Wilson
I've mentioned this one before on rcb, but the responses were inconclusive, and I've now managed to work out some techniques that might lead to a more definite conclusion. I'd like to know what others think. I have a book which contains an inscription, which is definitely handwritten, and a...

Using bleach on your rare books by Bill Palmer
Recently I obtained a fine library discard: It is one of those wonderful Scribner's illustrated classics from the Twenties. If you buy a fine copy of this book from a rare book dealer, you might expect to pay at least $100.00. Well, my copy is in near fine condition--except for the usual...

FA: Hemingway: Old Man and Sea early/1st NF by TL Reed
See my Ebay auction for photos of an early or first edition of Hemingway's classic. It's a BOMC 1952 edition, but 2 sellers on Alibris are selling the same grade of this particular "W" version for over $300--you can get it for a bargain! Thanks for...
