Anyone familiar with the various book cover materials? by The People's Poet
As a teenager I recall seeking the advice of a shop assistant in either Waterstones or WH Smiths on this exact same question, eager to protect my cherished Wildes, Orwells and Burroughs. He strongly recommended a clear adhesive film like gigantic sellotape. Not knowing better, I used it, and ruined...

Identification for Random House by Neweyess
I'm just trying to learn how to identify first editions. I read a few things about it on the internet including the FAQ for this newsgoup. Everthing I read said that Random House is an exception to the rule as far as having a string of numbers with "1" being the lowest to indicate a first edition....

Italic letters by CWM
I'm not sure where else to ask this, so I thought I'd try here. I'm translating an old hymnal from Hawaiian to English, and I keep running into works with single letters italicized. Does anyone know what the purpose of this was? The letters italicized are always vowels, and it's usually the same...

Humidity by David Ames
A plastic-wrap product (I believe it was Saran Wrap) used to advertise that the odor of meat wrapped in it couldn't be perceived by wild animals. Would it be wrong to assume that humidity cannot enter a package outer-wrapped in Saran Wrap? David Ames

One that got away - and a couple that didn't by Francis A. Miniter
The price was just too much - for me, not for the book. At the Avon (Connecticut) Public Library Sale this weekend, they had a signed, first edition (two volumes) of Booker T. Washington's "The Story of the Negro" in very good condition, for $200. I will probably think about not buying for a long...

Before this group gives up the ghost completely, I have a question about limitation indications. While scouting yesterday I picked up a bunch of small press scifi limited editions. On the limitation page of one of them, out of an edition of 1,000, it had not a number but the letters "PC." My...
