Washed Books ? by
[email protected]
Hi RCB-ers,
A rare book seller told me that a 400-year old book (that I just
found) was washed and rebound in the XIX century, to fit the style of
the library of the new owner. He said this was a common practice back
then.
Is this true ? How does that affect the book condition and book
value ?

I have a book that was printed in 1660 in London titled "The Great
Fire in London" and details events surrounding the fire. The covers
are leather and there are are few illustrations. The book is in very
good condition. An aunt gave it to me circa 1960 when she moved into
her house in...

Railway Reading by
Jack Campin - bogus address
Having just come across the Indian Railway editions of Kipling I was
curious to see if anybody had done a survey of publishing intended
for the 19th century railway traveller market (something Tauchnitz
specialized in). Not an easy topic to google for. What is there?

The week's finds by
Denton Taylor
Hey all:
Not a bad week: one library sale, one church sale, one block sale.
At the church sale, in spite of the presence of multiple dealers, I
scored a true first/first of Cold Mountain. I must have picked up
fifty copies over the last couple of years, looking for the first, and
had to put them...

goodwill shopping by
WaPam
I go to my local Goodwill a lot and there are several people who
just pile the books in shopping charts , as many as they can grab,
when the books come into the as-is department and then sit and use a
phone, decide what ones to keep and what ones to toss back. I'm
curious at to what they...

E. Richard Johnson by
Willow Arune[_2_]
Thanks to finding one book by this writer in a strange second hand place, I
now have all of his very "noir" books and enjoyed them all.
What makes it a bit strange is that Johnson wrote all his books while
serving time for murder at Stillwater Prison in Minnesota.
SILVER STREET starts them off,...

Donated books by

Hi,
I am a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. I am very interested in
building a library in my town, we have a population of about 2,000
children and the only library is this shelf sitting in the
municipality filled with outdated material, most of which is unrelated
to education. I was checking...

The Power and the Glory - Graham Greene edition by
Ferris92
I own two versions of Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory and
taking them both out I noticed that they had some odd discrepancies.
Even in the first sentence, one edition had a comma and the other a
colon. And in the next sentence there are "vultures" referred to and
in the other...

American History and Encyclopedia of Music (1908) by
EvelynVogtGamble(Divamanque)
I have the full ten-volume set in extremely well-preserved
condition. (I'd say "mint", because the books have had the
best of care, but a hundred years, even carefully preserved
in a bookcase, leave their mark.)
The set belonged to my grandfather, and although some of the
information may be...

Valuable item? by
Mark Tandy
I'm trying to ascertain the value of a small book that's been in our
family 'forever'. It's "Relapse, or Virtue in Danger' by Sir John
Vanbrugh. Printed 1735.
Anyone any ideas who I might ask about this item?
Cheers,
Mark
