Research and the Internet by
Francis A. Miniter
The purpose of this recitation is to share a recent research experience using
the internet.
I have been working hard to create an author database for the works in my
collection. As I come to each author, I have been putting in birth and death
dates, nationality (as far as possible) and important...

A further question on "The Little Prince" by
visualweasel
Hi everyone. I have a copy that shows Harcourt, 1943, no refernce to which
printing, but the code FF underneath the copyright block. Any idea what
this means? I wondered if it meant sixth printing, but perhaps that's just
wishful thinking? I don't recall seeing anything else on the page to
indicate...

"Da Vinci Code" -- BCE or not? by
visualweasel
Hi everyone. I have a copy of Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code". The
copyright page states FIRST EDITION, APRIL 2003, and has the full
numberline, just like the true first printing should. It also has both
well-known first printing mistakes ("skitoma" and "Lyon"). But here's the
weird part. The book...

Gragborn - Howe Connection? by
Linoleum Blownapart
Does anyone know what connection there was between Edwin Grabhorn of
Grabhorn Press and a Miss Mary Howe? Several of my books were signed from
Grabhorn to Howe and it sounds like he knew her very well.

John Updike cleans house by
Jon Meyers
The author John Updike recently sold--to Massachusetts dealer Mark Stolle--a
large portion of the books he has accumulated over the past few decades.
These books include many with Updike's marginal notations for reviews. From
the very brief AP item:
"Updike, who counts himself a supporter of...

Ethics of Book Disbinding... by
Palladiotypist
I have recently bought a couple of nice engravings on eBay for an
affordable price. I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford a whole book from
1672 or whatever. But...it's made me wonder about the ethics involved
with taking apart an old book and cutting out the engravings for
individual sale and I...

formatting of messages on this usenet by
[email protected]
The formatting on posted messages is really irritating, or maybe I am
the only one bothered? Lines of text have hard breaks at odd places
making the reading bothersome. Anyone know why? (And yes, I have
changed the size of text under "view").

Australia's top 100 books by
Richard Moriarty
This is an interesting list for you guys.
The ABC is the same as the American ... PBS? - It's the public
broadcaster.
Over most of this year, soliciting was done only via public radio and
the ABC webpage to type into a blank field what your favorite book is.
There's a few local heroes there, and...

Earth Sea or Sky by
infospy
My mother has hundreds of old books and is looking for a place to find out
the value of them. She wants them to be taken care of after she leaves but
doesn't want to just give them away.
Is there a site on the net that can give her this info.
Thanks

Latest finds and a suggested book by
BookEditions
Greetings and Happy Holidays!
Made my monthly trip to a favorite used book store in Wisconsin today. Wish all
bookstores had employees who didn't know much about books, although I realize
you can't know everything about all of them.
However, today's find was Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged...

Kill the moth balls by
Richard Moriarty
Hi all.
Had any luck killing the smell of moth balls?
I bought a copy of Greek and Roman naval warfa a study of strategy,
tactics, and ship design / William Ledyard for $35AUS from Global
Village Books.
The Abe ad mentioned 'spotting' so I asked about smells.
"No the book is not smelly" was...

Guy using handheld to price used books? by
Dave C
I have noticed a couple of mysterious people with handheld devices hunting
through the stacks at our library's used book sale. They open selected
books and then key some information into their handhelds. In most cases
they return the book to the shelf. Sometimes they buy a book.
What the heck...

The John Pelan FAQ by
Haunted River
The John Pelan FAQ
WHO is John Pelan?
John Pelan is the self-acclaimed editor of a handful of minor, badly
edited anthologies. He is also the author of some derivative and badly
written short stories and horror novellas. His work is conspicuous for
its obsession with the sadistic and the sexually...

If I may wax slightly self-important for a moment, I do believe one of
the reasons this group has gone downhill is that I stopped acting as
"Bad Cop" when I moved into my new house and changed ISPs several
months ago.
As many old-timers may remember, I used to post the "NO FS" message
